I have been creating my own Hot Dog Meat Sauce for as long as I can remember and I do not think I have made it the same way twice.
It’s an “eyeball it” thing with what I have on hand. For the most part it is the same otherwise you start messing with it being called “Hot Dog Meat Sauce”. I wanted to share the idea with you for the upcoming summer picnic holidays, like this weekend’s Memorial Day, because it can be a great dish to bring as a gift. It can also be a fun and fabulous gift to send home with your party guests and I will share my ideas with you.
But that means I had to come up with an actual recipe.
For you, I will.
If you do not have a particular ingredient on hand, omitting it from the sauce will not make your sauce flop. It is meant to be a “throw-together” sauce…unless maybe you do not have pasta sauce or BBQ sauce. They are a bit like the stars of the sauce – they have the most lines.
You can make half of this recipe if you need less, but it can be stored in the freezer so you may as well make a batch. You will have more hot dogs this summer, for sure!
Once you get the hang of it, it also is more of a “squeeze, plop and stir” kind of sauce. Here are some measurements to get you going…
Hot Dog Meat Sauce
1 lb ground beef (chicken, turkey, or even tofu I suppose)
1/4 cup pasta sauce
1/4 cup BBQ sauce
2 tablespoons ketchup
2 tablespoons hot sauce of your liking (or omit)
1 tablespoon mustard
1 tablespoon vinegar, any kind – I used seasoned rice vinegar
1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
3 dashes of Worcestershire sauce
3 dashes of soy sauce
salt & pepper to taste
– Brown and drain the ground beef.
– Combine all of the ingredients and mix in the ground beef.
Serve with fresh diced onions, fried onions and banana peppers…yum!
That’s it – you’re done! This can be made ahead of time and refrigerated (just warm it before serving) or it is ready to take along to your picnic party.
To share some Hot Dog Meat Sauce with guests, let it cool a bit and make jars of sauce to take home. You can send them with just the sauce or with the meat added.
For a host/hostess gift, make a basket by adding hot dogs, buns and a bag of chips along with your jarred sauce.
That gift will get you invited back again!
I know I would invite you back…and bring your meat sauce too…
